The MD Codes™ at S-Thetics Clinic

Last week I had the honor of being part of the most sought after training event in our profession, the MD Codes™ Visionary Program, with Allergan.

Delivered by Dr Mauricio de Maio, a world-renowned Brazilian plastic surgeon from Sao Paulo and creator of the MD Codes, the 2-day Visionary Program introduced practitioners to a unique, strategic and methodical way of analysing and treating patients’ faces.

By understanding how our facial anatomy evolves as we age, and utilising the Allergan portfolio of dermal fillers, these advanced injecting skills allow me to sympathetically restore and rejuvenate a patients face in a balanced and harmonious way.

I have had the pleasure of learning directly with Dr de Maio for over 5 years now, since being part of the UK Allergan Faculty. As one of only a few hand-picked doctors chosen to represent Allergan as a “Local Country Ambassador” (LCA), I was amongst the first UK doctors to be trained on the MD Codes.

This 1-to-1 training first began with the 8-Point Lift, which Dr de Maio identified as the 8 key areas of the face such as the apex of the cheek, over to the angle of the jawline to give lift, projection and improve facial sagging.

Fast forward 5 years and we are now introduced to 75 facial codes, which take into consideration key subunits within our facial units (such as the temples, forehead, eyes, cheeks, lips, chin and jawline).

Addressing individual subunits with careful attention to detail, low injection volumes and respecting individual facial profiles whilst using the correct facial fillers now puts us in a unique position where we can deliver safe, predictable and elegant results to our patients.

What are the MD Codes?

They take into account a patient’s full face, addressing the following facial units in a strategic fashion:

  • Forehead
  • Glabella (Frown)
  • Temples
  • Eyebrow
  • Eyes
  • Cheeks
  • Nasolabial Folds
  • Marionette Region
  • Lips
  • Chin
  • Jawline

The MD Codes look at these individual facial units and breaks them down into sub-units, so as to optimise the patient’s results.

They represent a synergy between a deep, surgical knowledge of your facial anatomy and how these areas work in harmony to create the ideal aesthetic outcome.

How will this technique benefit me?

Previously, more outdated techniques of simply chasing lines or injecting directly into target areas, could create a more unnatural appearance as they fail to take into consideration a patients’ anatomy and unique ageing pattern, and instead treat the symptom of ageing rather than the cause.

By taking a more anatomical approach, as well as identifying the patients’ ageing concerns themselves during the consultation process, the MD Codes enable a more analytical, strategic and uniform delivery of advanced injectable skill to help treat the causes of facial ageing.

The desired result is a healthy, refreshed look – like after a good night’s sleep or holiday – not to dramatically change the way you look or make you look like someone else.

What products do you use?

S-Thetics use the Juvéderm® range of Hyaluronic Acid (HA) facial fillers manufactured by Allergan, which is the number-1 product range on the market, with over 25 years of experience and clinical trials demonstrating safety and efficacy.

These products have a smooth consistency, meaning that they can last for longer, result in less swelling and give a more natural look and feel. Depending on the area treated, results can last from 12-18 months.

The Juvéderm® range also contains the mild local anaesthetic lidocaine, which allows for a gentle injection experience. If you have any needle anxieties you will be offered a numbing cream to alleviate any potential discomfort.
