Natural Beauty – A Guide to Facial Fillers

April 8, 2016 11:48 am Published by

Most patients having a cosmetic treatment are seeking a more youthful appearance, but still want to look like themselves. So a good rule of thumb is to undergo temporary procedures that wear off, before committing to something permanent.

A 2013 study in a leading Facial Plastic Surgery journal has shown that, while cosmetic surgery can make people look younger, it doesn’t necessarily make them more beautiful.

Erasing lines and folds, tightening sagging skin, or restoring young full lips may rejuvenate some faces, but as we are all aware, can also look odd and a bit out of balance on others.

Patients new to fillers often bring up fear of this kind of “unnatural” result, causing some to avoid treatments altogether.

The restoration of a natural volume distribution is a major goal in facial rejuvenation. Having a detailed understanding of facial anatomy to recognize “what’s been lost where” on a case-by-case basis so as to individualise treatment plans, helps to offer the sort of subtle and natural-looking results desired by my patients who often tell me that they don’t want to look done, but just want to perhaps look less tired.

The MD Codes™ at S-Thetics Clinic

February 29, 2016 12:09 pm Published by

Last week I had the honor of being part of the most sought after training event in our profession, the MD Codes™ Visionary Program, with Allergan.

Delivered by Dr Mauricio de Maio, a world-renowned Brazilian plastic surgeon from Sao Paulo and creator of the MD Codes, the 2-day Visionary Program introduced practitioners to a unique, strategic and methodical way of analysing and treating patients’ faces.

By understanding how our facial anatomy evolves as we age, and utilising the Allergan portfolio of dermal fillers, these advanced injecting skills allow me to sympathetically restore and rejuvenate a patients face in a balanced and harmonious way.

Miss Sherina Balaratnam with Dr Mauricio de Maio, Brazlian Plastic Surgeon and creator of the MD Codes

I have had the pleasure of learning directly with Dr de Maio for over 5 years now, since being part of the UK Allergan Faculty. As one of only a few hand-picked doctors chosen to represent Allergan as a “Local Country Ambassador” (LCA), I was amongst the first UK doctors to be trained on the MD Codes.

This 1-to-1 training first began with the 8-Point Lift, which Dr de Maio identified as the 8 key areas of the face such as the apex of the cheek, over to the angle of the jawline to give lift, projection and improve facial sagging.

Fast forward 5 years and we are now introduced to 75 facial codes, which take into consideration key subunits within our facial units (such as the temples, forehead, eyes, cheeks, lips, chin and jawline).

Addressing individual subunits with careful attention to detail, low injection volumes and respecting individual facial profiles whilst using the correct facial fillers now puts us in a unique position where we can deliver safe, predictable and elegant results to our patients.

What are the MD Codes?

They take into account a patient’s full face, addressing the following facial units in a strategic fashion:

  • Forehead
  • Glabella (Frown)
  • Temples
  • Eyebrow
  • Eyes
  • Cheeks
  • Nasolabial Folds
  • Marionette Region
  • Lips
  • Chin
  • Jawline

The MD Codes look at these individual facial units and breaks them down into sub-units, so as to optimise the patient’s results.

They represent a synergy between a deep, surgical knowledge of your facial anatomy and how these areas work in harmony to create the ideal aesthetic outcome.

How will this technique benefit me?

Previously, more outdated techniques of simply chasing lines or injecting directly into target areas, could create a more unnatural appearance as they fail to take into consideration a patients’ anatomy and unique ageing pattern, and instead treat the symptom of ageing rather than the cause.

By taking a more anatomical approach, as well as identifying the patients’ ageing concerns themselves during the consultation process, the MD Codes enable a more analytical, strategic and uniform delivery of advanced injectable skill to help treat the causes of facial ageing.

The desired result is a healthy, refreshed look – like after a good night’s sleep or holiday – not to dramatically change the way you look or make you look like someone else.

What products do you use?

S-Thetics use the Juvéderm® range of Hyaluronic Acid (HA) facial fillers manufactured by Allergan, which is the number-1 product range on the market, with over 25 years of experience and clinical trials demonstrating safety and efficacy.

These products have a smooth consistency, meaning that they can last for longer, result in less swelling and give a more natural look and feel. Depending on the area treated, results can last from 12-18 months.

The Juvéderm® range also contains the mild local anaesthetic lidocaine, which allows for a gentle injection experience. If you have any needle anxieties you will be offered a numbing cream to alleviate any potential discomfort.

S-Thetics Clinic featured in the Riverside Journals – advice on dermal filler treatments

February 12, 2016 3:10 pm Published by

Miss Balaratnam, Medical Director of S-Thetics Clinic, is featured in the Riverside Journals Winter edition, with practical advice for those considering having dermal filler treatments.

Did you know that three million women would consider facial fillers? Allergan, global pharmaceutical company and manufacturer of temporary filler Juvéderm®, found that 90% of those who had facial filler treatments were satisfied with their results – a glowing contrast to what is reported and sensationalised within everyday media.

The fillers we use at S-Thetics are composed of Hyaluronic Acid (“HA). HA is found in abundance in our skin, cartilage, joints and the fluid in our eyes and is the most water-loving molecule known to man. Around 1/3rd of our total HA is made and broken down daily, and as we age our bodies’ natural ability to regenerate HA slowly decreases.

Miss Balaratnam and the S-Thetics clinic are this month featured in the Aesthetics Journal, the UK’s leading monthly journal for medical aesthetic professionals.

Miss Balaratnam of S-Thetics co-presented a talk with Mr Nigel Mercer on the synergy between surgical and non-surgical aesthetic procedures at S-Thetics medical aesthetic clinic in Beaconsfield.

The discussion captured some of the key topics in the industry including emerging trends, how to achieve natural results and demystifying the sometimes overwhelming array of options available in both cosmetic surgery and medicine.

Another key discussion topic centred on patient safety, regulatory issues and the need for patients to thoroughly research any practitioner and treatment.

A number of before and after images were shown which illustrated the results which can be achieved both surgically and non-surgically utilising treatments such as dermal fillers for full face rejuvenation, blepharoplasty (eyelid surgery) and facelifts.

The interactive session featured a Q&A with a number of questions from attendees and an open forum to discuss the range of potential options available from a patient perspective.

Mr Nigel Mercer, MB ChB, ChM, FRCS, FRCPCH, is recognised as one of the UK’s leading facelift surgeons, and holds the prestigious title of President of the British Association of Plastic, Reconstructive and Aesthetic Surgeons (BAPRAS).

Mr Mercer is also the former President of the British Association of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons (BAAPS) and European Association of Societies of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (EASAPS).

S-Thetics Beaconsfield Aesthetics Journal Miss Sherina Balaratnam Mr Nigel Mercer talk synergy

““Behind every good Plastic Surgeon there should be an expert in Cosmetic Medicine” is the mantra that underpinned the meeting at S-Thetics, in Beaconsfield. Dr Sherina and I have worked together for years and we have a very good understanding of where our strengths are. The benefit of such a close working relationship is the ability to offer patients the whole spectrum of what is available to improve their concerns, avoiding the risk of patients visiting a singleton practitioner and being advised to have a procedure that is not necessarily the best for their problem. We hope the audience took away the strength of collaboration and trust that we were putting forward.”

Mr Nigel Mercer, MB ChB, ChM, FRCS, FRCPCH

“It was a pleasure to be invited to the S-Thetics Clinic Beaconsfield and to meet and listen to their special guest speaker, plastic surgeon Mr Nigel Mercer.
The evening was a great success for Miss Sherina Balaratnam and her professional team and was extremely interesting, highlighting many of the facts and important questions before choosing cosmetic plastic surgery.
Mr Nigel Mercer and Miss Balaratnam work together as a fantastic specialist team working in Surgical Cosmetic procedures and Non surgical cosmetic treatments. I would feel completely safe and at ease in their hands and look forward to visiting S-Thetics for another treatment very soon.”
